Atty. Joel Viado named new BI caretaker

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla has designated Deputy Commissioner Atty. Joel Anthony M. Viado as Bureau of Immigration (BI) Officer-in-Charge.

This comes after Remulla recommended to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. the termination of Commissioner Norman Tansingco due to his lack of action and failure to oversee matters under his watch that led to various immigration concerns.

“This has been a big problem for the longest time, we have not been lacking of reminders to the Immigration Commissioner about these problems,” Remulla said in a press release.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) said Viado will lead the day-to-day operations of the BI and that his designation will be effective immediately until Marcos Jr. appoints a new Commissioner.

“It is essential that we assure our people that the services of our immigration bureau will remain uninterrupted and consistent regardless of any transition in leadership,” according to the DOJ chief.

“Hence, I entrust the stewardship of the bureau to Deputy Commissioner Viado, who I believe is best fit for the position.” added Remulla.
