The “Staggered” Implementation
To prevent a “one-time big-time” shock, several major oil firms have agreed with the DOE to implement these hikes in staggered tranches between March 17 and March 19:
- Petron, Shell, and Flying V: 3-day staggered rollout.
- Seaoil and Total: 2-day staggered rollout.
Impact on the March 20 Long Weekend
This hike hits exactly as thousands of Filipinos prepare to drive to the provinces for the Eid’l Fitr break.
- Provincial Bus Fares: The LTFRB has already released an updated Fare Guide as of March 14, reflecting provisional increases for provincial public utility buses (PUBs).
- Transport Strike: Be advised that PISTON has announced a transport strike beginning this Thursday, March 19, to protest the soaring fuel costs. This may severely affect commuters trying to leave the city early.
- Fuel Subsidy: The government is set to begin rolling out a ₱5,000 fuel subsidy starting tomorrow, March 17, for approximately 360,000 qualified tricycle drivers and transport operators.
Tips for Motorists Today
- Gas Up Tonight: If you are planning a road trip this Friday, fill your tank before midnight tonight (March 16). Even with staggered hikes, the first “tranche” hits tomorrow morning.
- Check the Fare Guide: If you are commuting via provincial bus, check the latest LTFRB Fare Guide at the terminal to ensure you aren’t being overcharged.
