Juan Ponce Enrile, Veteran Statesman, Dies at 101

MANILA, Philippines — Juan Ponce Enrile, one of the most enduring figures in Philippine politics, has passed away at the age of 101, leaving a complex legacy that spanned the Marcos dictatorship, the People Power Revolution, and decades of public service under successive administrations.

“It is with profound love and gratitude that my father, Juan Ponce Enrile, peacefully returned to his Creator on November 13, 2025, at 4:21 p.m., surrounded by our family in the comfort of our home,” his daughter Katrina said in a statement. “It was his heartfelt wish to take his final rest at home, with his family by his side. We were blessed to honor that wish and to be with him in those sacred final moments.”

Enrile is survived by his wife Cristina Castañer, their two children Jack and Katrina, eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. The family has requested privacy as they mourn his passing.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who personally called Enrile “Tito Johnny,” praised him as “one of the most enduring and respected public servants our country has ever known.” He highlighted Enrile’s decades-long service, saying the veteran politician helped guide the nation through “some of its most challenging and defining moments.”

Enrile’s political career was marked by both controversy and influence. He played a central role in the Marcos regime’s martial law period, later helped facilitate the ouster of Ferdinand Marcos Sr., and continued to serve in government well into his late 90s, even joining Marcos Jr.’s administration as a senior adviser in 2022.

Having outlived many of his peers—including former Presidents Marcos Sr., Diosdado Macapagal, Corazon Aquino, Fidel Ramos, and Benigno Aquino III—Enrile also weathered legal battles, including the plunder and graft charges in the P10-billion pork barrel scandal, from which he was exonerated.

On his 101st birthday this February, President Marcos Jr. called him a “statesman, a legal luminary, and an exemplary public servant” who not only witnessed history but actively shaped it.

Enrile’s life remains a subject of study and debate—a figure whose longevity allowed him to influence multiple generations of Filipino politics, leaving behind both admiration and controversy in equal measure.
